So this contrasts a bit with your usage. I'm not content with my 'flex' term because it's not directly clear. However these hybrid systems are waning in importance perhaps solving my problem.

I agree with dockless not being perfect, being defined for what it's not, but it's rather clear and widely adopted in the public/media and literature even.

Branding of the tech, in terms of the innovation they bring, is important for BSS. The 'smart' bikeshare promotions of a few years ago are a good example of this (e.g., Vancouver, Portland). I wonder if tech providers don't *want* to promote the dockless nature as a selling point? What's your impression from interacting with them?

Personally I'd just like something that is clear and can be used as an acronym.
DBSS and BSS work well for now. What you call hybrid BSS (HBSS), have become less visible for me. Probably due to the 'dockless' systems taking away their shine, I wonder?

What are you seeing in terms of station-based BSS growth? Is it still the 'gold standard', more expensive but operating under local governance and longer lasting without the controversy of bike blocking etc... Having said that, interesting things appear to be happening in Seattle in terms of a controlled experiment.

I'm happy to have come across this article though as I'll refer to the various definitions you've defined as well as those I've mentioned.

Kind regards,
CyrilleCyrillehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09537501750862153178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-44328954963816151832016-06-06T13:16:41.814-04:002016-06-06T13:16:41.814-04:00It would be nice if we could have one device or ke...It would be nice if we could have one device or key-fab that provides us the option of using bikeshare, MARC or Metro. I decided to use my credit card and had no problem at all, so let's keep that aside.

She used her debit card, and as we expected, a 150€ deposit was issued from her bank account. Since she purchased the 1,70€ 1 day ticket three times (three different days), they took three 150€ deposits in a total of 450€ that should be refunded 10 to 15 days after the tickets expired. But she received no refund at all.

The dates of the tickets purchased were 11 november 2015, 12 november 2015 and 13 november 2015.

So as you can see, we patiently waited to receive the deserved refund but no refund was made.

So I decided to e-mail them bacause calling would cost a lot, but finding no e-mail like a support on their website, ended writing them through Facebook. A staff called Gisèle aswered asking the tickets number, and after having them told me I was right and they had no reason to keep the money. She then generated a PDF file with some information telling me that I should go to a bank and show them to receive my money back. She even said this "works everywhere in the world".

Well, of course that's not true and we couldn't receive anything. No bank can do anything with that useless piece of paper. First of all, a refund or a payment should be addressed to my wife's bank account where the deposits came from. And then maybe we needed a document telling the reason for that money so our government don't apply taxes over it.

After being told that paper does nothing, they simply stopped answering and kept our 450€.

So please be aware that the Vèlib service can't be really trusted and they may scam you if you use debit card. I need to share this because I don't want them to make this to other people. Be aware.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11040741782366975680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-23973031867172904742015-08-19T13:49:13.116-04:002015-08-19T13:49:13.116-04:00hello I have a suggestion, specifically in Caracas...hello I have a suggestion, specifically in Caracas in Venezuela there are bike paths but the problem is that no bicycles in the country, can not buy new ones, which are used to this bike path are not available and there are few existing, we are also objects of bicycle thefts, and the government uses its website as a means of dirty politicsJoNB3xhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09115579634302798456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-33576013530848415812015-07-20T10:13:40.882-04:002015-07-20T10:13:40.882-04:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-76187435938749329772015-04-16T12:05:58.439-04:002015-04-16T12:05:58.439-04:00Here's a nice article from Copenhagenize talki...Here's a nice article from Copenhagenize talking about other fundamental problems with the service: http://www.copenhagenize.com/2015/02/watching-copenhagen-bike-share-die.htmlCyrillehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09537501750862153178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-84288453553466915572015-04-10T06:16:40.655-04:002015-04-10T06:16:40.655-04:00Big up from Budapest (1100 bikes at the moment)!Big up from Budapest (1100 bikes at the moment)!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17371789459539820171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-91394559891162083872015-02-17T12:32:21.031-05:002015-02-17T12:32:21.031-05:00Peter, these bikes were made by Cycle Importers of...Peter, these bikes were made by Cycle Importers of Scandinavia.Paul DeMaiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15311271083094779653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-52549673003559919602015-02-03T03:37:41.458-05:002015-02-03T03:37:41.458-05:00Wish i could get my hands on one of these old bike...Wish i could get my hands on one of these old bikes. I agree that we should be more strategic regarding the pricing of bikeshare, but I'm not sure if the single flat fare model is the right direction. Moreover, I wouldn't call the flat-fare model innovative. It's the oldest transit fare model in the U.S. (ye olde $0.05 fare), and it only worked well at the beginning of the century when transit service was heavily subsidized by amusement parks, real estate developers, and a small handful of municipalities. For most public agencies, the flat fare has probably led to more problems than answers.Sara Barzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12657215458256536686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-37000187017496014322014-09-21T21:17:34.854-04:002014-09-21T21:17:34.854-04:00Aaron, I agree. This would be the best of both worlds, in my opinion.Paul DeMaiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15311271083094779653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-20529368428864950842014-09-15T21:56:39.338-04:002014-09-15T21:56:39.338-04:00This is a really interesting article (thanks @shar...This is a really interesting article (thanks @sharrowsDC). A friend of mine specifically complained as a visitor to DC that he was deciding between bikeshare and transit and didn't feel it was fair that he would have to pay $7 for one ride on a bike, vs. $1.75 for a bus. The penalization of single use riders and short-term riders (1-7 day) should really be addressed if possible.

You identify one of the reasons I would suggest for the success of the buffet model: encouraging trips. In cities where cycling infrastructure is being developed, you simply want to maximize total system usage and are willing to subsidize that to a certain extent. When I am making a transit decision, having "sunk" the cost of my membership for the year, the cost is removed from the equation and I treat bikeshare as "free" (even though I've paid to use it). Thus my decision tips towards bikeshare more often than not.

I also use bikeshare as a quick connector for very short (sub-5-minute) rides that would be discouraged by a pay-per-minute system...maybe rightly so? Putting bikeshare in the same category as Car2Go (initiation fee + pay per minute with max rate per hour) might encourage use by casual riders but feels to me like it would discourage use overallAaron Rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08918976861837794533noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7536492701084612733.post-56875064203682670552014-08-12T05:41:18.941-04:002014-08-12T05:41:18.941-04:00I'm heading for Turin this week, and seems lik...I'm heading for Turin this week, and seems like they have resolved the issue for tourists by having special tourist subscriptions available at the tourist offices. Even better, for usage in crowded areas you provide users with more credits. Then you take that data to your advertisement client and show them how much placing their ad is really worth (i.e. real times in traffic etc.).

Another concept is that you price bikes by demand (i.e. biking uphill gives you credit, downhill costs more) - but this mainly resolve the issue keeping stations full, but should not lead to extra income.

Also, your data (plus user surveys?) should give you a better sense how to increase usage. Ultimtately, increased usage is the only way to make a strong case for government funding - along the same case as transit does (more or less successfully).
